It was only a day trip to Shkodër in Albania, but it was a memorable one nonetheless.  Rozafa fortress is a great old ruin to wander round, and the museum in the grounds was really interesting.

I’m sad that I only gave myself one day in Albania, and wish I’d gone to Tirana too and stayed a bit longer.  Everyone was so happy to welcome a visitor, especially one who wanted to try Albanian wine instead of the Italian stuff the tourists usually want to buy.

But the main prizes awarded to Albania are for best oven-cooked lamb, and for national flag looking most like it should belong to a Bond villain.

Cheese fried with nettles. My mouth still waters at the memory of this.

I don’t think the historian in this little museum gets many visitors who actually ask questions; he seemed disproportionately pleased to show me round.

Rozafa fortress is on the top of that hill.

And here are more shots of and from Rozafa fortress.  It was a beautiful day in a beautiful country.
